The Creative Economy research project aims to, through extensive desk-based research, series of interviews, online meetings and surveys, take stock of the creative industries in Nigeria in an attempt to:
- provide recommendations on creative industry models that can work in Nigeria,
- present overview of the current policy and directives (including intellectual property, copyright) and how these may need to change, together with an
- explore of past incentives, funding and investments, evaluating their effectiveness; and
- identify public and private sector interventions that are required to harness the industry’s potential.
The project will document funding and investments interventions that have been aimed at the creative industries in Nigeria over the past 5-10 years. Current policies will also be assessed for their effectiveness, accessibility and benchmarked against global best practices in the creative sector as it relates to funding and investment. We will also look at how to harness opportunities unique to creative industries that will be available through the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCTA).
This project, supported by the Ford Foundation, aims to present the findings and recommendations to the Creative and Entertainment Industries Thematic Group (“CEITG”), of the Tourism, Hospitality, Entertainment, Creatives and Sports Industries (“THECS”) Policy Commission, within the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (“NESG”).
